CANCER INFORMATION MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATE
DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS
Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) offers two completely online Internet-based programs in Cancer Information Management (CIM). The first is an Associate in Science (AS) degree in CIM and the second is a certificate program for those who already have earned an AS degree or who plan to by 2010 as required by the National Cancer Registrars Association (NCRA).
Both programs were developed with the sponsorship of the California Cancer Registrars Association, Inc. (CCRA) to ensure that all Cancer Registry professionals have the required knowledge for excellence in the field. The CIM online curriculum is approved by NCRA as a formal education program that meets the eligibility requirements to sit for the national CTR certification examination.
The online classroom, in the WebCT Vista System, is always open. Learning activities include required readings, lectures, online discussions, site visits, individual and group projects, assignments, assessments in the form of quizzes, exams and lesson evaluations. Coursework has specific due dates within the semester. An SBCC faculty member (a CTR) directs each class and is available to work with students and answer questions. A final, onsite supervised practicum completes the series of courses for either the AS degree or certificate.
California residents pay $20 per credit. CCRA collaborates with SBCC to offer non-California residents a reduced tuition fee for CIM courses. The reduced fee is $95 per unit (credit hour). Students receive full college credit for the courses. Under this collaboration, out-of-state students submit their online application to SBCC but submit their registration/ enrollment through the CCRA. In addition to the registration fee, students are charged a $40 (nonrefundable) processing fee each semester. The registration form (click here) is posted on this CCRA website several months before classes begin each semester.
